The Eighth Legion society has its origins in North Wales, but over the years, our membership has spread far and wide extending from South Wales to North West England and into Scotland, and across the Pennines to North East England and as far as East Riding of Yorkshire.
We come from all walks of life and backgrounds, with all levels of knowledge and different levels of interest and participation, with a broad age range, including children who are also welcome to join along with their respective adult member.
Originally being a smaller group, we chose to depict the Eighth Legion, which although was never stationed in Britain as a whole legion (being based in Germania on the Rhine at Strasbourg) it did occasionally send over small detachments or ‘vexillations’ of troops to help out the British based legions from time to time. We quite often do the same thing in our present incarnation too, as we are more than happy to work together with other Roman societies to provide a larger presence.
In addition to the military side of our society, we have a thriving and continually expanding civilian part too, which provides much of our living history display. We hope to expand further both on the military side (legions and auxiliary troops) and civilian side. If there s enough interest, we can also explore developing the local Celt or Britton side of the display and their interaction with the Roman army.
We can’t deny that it’s hard work, with long days and being on the go all day, accommodation at most events is in the form of camping, so be prepared to camp out, which can either be in modern tents (if the event organisers permit it) or in one of the display or authentic tents, but the camaraderie and shared experience of being part of a working team ‘out on the road’ is something that you’ll struggle to find anywhere else in modern life.
We organise food for the event, which is cooked in our Roman kitchen, and we ensure that members are taken great care of and will always make sure you are looked after at events. We are seasoned professionals, with decades of experience in safe practices, backed up with comprehensive insurance cover.
